A Most Notorious Pyrate:
Black Bart Roberts in the Royal Fortune
24x36 inches — oil on canvas
Bartholomew Roberts, also known as Black Bart, was one of the most feared pirates of the golden age of piracy. His exploits are known from a book published in 1724 in England, “A General History of the Robberies and Murders of the most notorious Pyrates.”
Roberts raided ships in the Atlantic beginning in 1719. He captured a series of ships, each time moving his command into the better ship and renaming it Royal Fortune. Roberts was hunted down and killed in 1722.
